What is RSS?

RSS stands for either Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary. In both cases, what this actually means is that it gives you a quick and simple way to check for updated content on your favourite websites without the need to open a browser.

For example, here on the Zoos Victoria website you can subscribe to feeds to get the latest Zoos news, be first to know about events, or even subscribe to the news and events feeds for any one of our Three Great Zoos.

What do I need?

There are various different ways of subscribing to feeds, but to keep it simple, what you really need is a news reader. News readers work in a similar manner to your email program – it checks for new items and tells you if there is anything new to check.

To find a news reader use your favourite search engine and search for news reader, RSS or RSS reader. Be sure to check that the news reader you choose works on your operating system (Windows, Mac or Linux).

How do I subscribe?

Once you have your news reader, keep a look out for the RSS symbol (an orange box with three curved lines) when you see one on a site you like, click it and your news reader should do the rest. Otherwise, you may also sometimes find text links to RSS feeds, once again, you should be able to click the link and let your news reader do the rest. Try it now.
